Vehrmacht Bulldog

Beitragvon torstein_teigene » 05.06.2014, 07:59

Hi! I have just bought a -41 HR9, used by the Vehrmacht in Norway during WWII.
The tractor is a project, and I have a few questions since I am not an expert on the Lanz field.
Where the Wehrmacht Bulldogs any different from the other Bulldogs? I was told that the 28" rims, and curved roof is special for the Wehrmacht.
Is this true? Are there any other differences?
My tractor also has some kind of frame behind the diesel tank. The frame is made of angle bars, but it has been cutted off.
Does anybody have a suggestion what kind of equipment that could have been mounted here?
I could post a few pictures, but I do not know how to do it :)

This tractor was sold to a farmer by the Norwegian government 1946/47, on a military auction.
It was in use with a snow-plow and snow-chains, and that is why the fenders are missing.
It was used up to the early '60s, when it was parked outside. I bought it from the son of the original owner, also a farmer.
Luckily the exhaust has been covered, so the engine still turns.
I believe this is the last HR9 not already found by collectors in Norway.
I can see the tractor has been wehrmacht grey, but the inside of the flywheel cover has traces of original blue paint.
Was the wehrmacht tractors first painted orginal Lanz color, and then grey?

Hi,congratulations for this great found!
Are you sure 1941 is correct (according to the ident-number)?
Anyway a post-war exhaust has been fitted, maybe to exceed ground-clearence.
Could this be a formerly civil pre-war Bulldog with downswept exhaust which was 'recruited' by the Wehrmacht? That would explain the two colours, too.
I don't think Lanz would waste paint in times when it was in short supply.
Posting the ident-number would make this clear.

Yes, the original identity plate says 1941 serial 151710.
I have not found traces of blue anywhere else than on the inside of the flywheel cover, so it is possible that the cover has been swapped.
But on the other hand the tractor is quite rusty, so it is kinda hard to find any color at all.

Hi there,

nice find! This vid may interest you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVDxb1laQaY

This is an ex - Wehrmacht Eilbulldog with the typical configuration (exhaust, rear wheels, no winch, no Cabrio hood). This particular example was sourced out of Scandinavia as well! I have seen it in person (the one in the vid) and it is very nicely preserved. I believe this is a good guideline how your Bulldog did look like.

Being a 1941 modelyear it is most likely this was a military ordered Bulldog from the start and not a seized former privately owned one.

Yes I know about this tractor - it has a higher serial number than mine, so i guess this is a late 1941, and mine is early.
I agree to you're theory about this being a military ordered bulldog, that is why I find the blue color so strange.

Are you sure the flywheel cover wasnt fitted from another Bulldog post war? And its blue paint under the Wehrmacht grey?

Also in those times they probably just used whatever was on hand so it may have left the factory in blue. Im not sure if the specially ordered military Bulldogs came in grey already from factory, I dont think this has been adressed yet in the numurous books about Lanz.

Also more pictures are always welcome. Its rare to see these machines "as found". Unfortunately its been common in Germany to restore them with lots of shiny paint and chrome that of course they never had in period. Not even speaking about the lots of fakes that are around these days as well.

Hi,

I know of a 1941 HR9 with a slightly lower serialnumber than yours that is also blue. The owner told me that Luftwaffe machines were painted blue and not grey. Another possibility is that all machines were painted blue and then in whatever colour the customer wanted.
My guess is that your tractor once had a fixed roof and should still have some sort of attachment between the seat and rear/sidewalls.

Nice catch

Hi,

Ok. -maybe it original was ment to be a luftwaffe machine, and then painted gray to be used by the Wehrmacht in Norway.
If this is so, I should be able to find more blue paint when I start to dismantle the machine. If not, I guess the most likely answer must be that the flywheel cover has been changed at some point.
Perhaps you can send me contact info for the owner of the "Luftwaffe machine" on PM? It would be nice to have a talk with him, and compare photos.
