The amazing Lanz Bulldog tractor

The Lanz Bulldog tractor was made mostly in Germany from 1921 to 1960, also being built under licence elsewhere, including a version built from 1948 to 1952 by Kelly & Lewis in Springvale, Victoria.

It used a two-stroke version of the hot bulb engine, which while usually using fuel oil (similar to diesel) could also use kerosene, crude oil, vegetable oil and waste oil to name a few. Probably their biggest asset was being very simple to operate, not having many moving parts and therefore relatively easy to maintain.

The engines were inherently low revving (50-300rpm) but powerful for all that, so quite good not just as tractors, but also pumps, generators and in other stationary applications.
